Welcome
to the Museum
The
entrance is now through 'The Victorian Teashop', so you will receive
a friendly welcome before going up to the first floor, which is
occupied entirely by the 'Life in a Lens' museum. It is set out
in a number of themed rooms in which we have created atmospheres
to suit various aspects of photographic history. These include 'The
Seaside Room' and 'The Dark-room', together with other areas of
special interest.
The
Victorians gave us photography and made it popular, so we have provided
an overriding ambiance of Victorian times including original 'Victorian
and Vintage' clothing displayed on our life-like mannequins. This
aspect has been growing for some time now and it is our intention
to integrate more Victorian displays and more about Victorian history
and the history of the village of Matlock Bath itself.
You
will find the atmosphere in the museum calm and relaxing
a pleasant contrast from some aspects of modern-day Matlock Bath
and among the many interesting items we have on display you are
sure to find something of special interest to you. We have certainly
catered for all age groups and levels of interest. There are over
five hundred cameras on display, along with postcards and packaging
and for the student of photographic history, there is plenty
of carefully researched information at their disposal.
The
museum is designed for people of all walks of life and is appreciated
on many levels. We therefore encourage organised trips from schools,
colleges and clubs, for which special rates can be arranged. A great
deal of time and attention to detail have gone into the creation
of 'Life in a Lens'. We have plans for expansion which can only
flourish with your interest, so if it sounds like your cup of tea
- please visit. We'll be happy to see you and you'll be so glad
you did – you can buy a cup of tea at The Victorian Teashop
too!
